Tam Coc

Tam Coc, which lies at the southern edge of the Red river
province, is renowned for unusual limestone formations that jut from thw surrounding paddy fields in breathtaking scenery similar to that of Ha Long Bay. Visitors take small reed boats through the Tam Coc Waterway, which is a series of large canals that winds through rice paddies. Towering limestone formations which look like mythical dragons and ancient kings and queens, seem to reach out and touch intruders with their turbulent histories.
Some of local people use poles to propel the tiny boats. Others row, using their feet to work the oars and leaving their hands free to pick water spinach or wave at tourists. The atmosphere is serene, with mist softening the shapes of the mountains and limestone cliffs. After about half an hour, visitors glide in awed silence through the first cave and emerge to more rice paddies dotted with egrets.
